Inquiry
What a fascinating session of questioning we had today in Social Studies! The grade 3 students have been learning about Canada from 1780-1850 and the Grade 4 students have been divided into groups in which they are aiming to learn about different ancient societies (China, Rome, Greece and Egypt).
As the students now know the inquiry process is as follows:
Today students were challenged to think of questions about their subjects. I intentionally didn't give them any topics to specifically think about.
Once they came up with some questions we stuck them on the board. Students were challenged to try and group questions by similar topics. These became our topics for inquiry!
Check out just a few of the facinating questions generated by students in...
Grade 4:
What was the best dynasty in Ancient China?
Why did Zeus get to rule over all the Greek Gods?
Were there any Gods in ancient China?
Why weren’t women allowed to vote in Greece??
When might they have let women vote for the government?
What is a dynasty of Ancient Egypt?
Why is it called the Roman Empire?
Grade 3
What was the population of the Kahnawa:ke people? How many Kahnawak:ke people were there in Canada?
What might people have eaten during this time?
Who were the most successful native groups in Canada? The Anishanabek, Kahnawa:ke, Metis, or Mohawk?
What is the language of the Cree?
What kind of languages did the different groups in Canada speak?
How did people combine French and Cree?
Was life hard when the settlers invaded where the natives lived?
How hard was it to move from people’s homes to Canada?
Here are the grade 4 class working on generating questions. Each question was written on a separate post it note.

- Generate Questions
- Pick a good inquiry question
- Research
- Present you findings

Both classes then went through the process of grouping their questions into similar categories. Here are the grade 3 students in the process. Notice how they came up with their own topic headings with no help from me.
Math
And as long as we're doing hands on learning...
In math today students were given a collection of containers and measuring cylinders. The goal was to get a good understanding of the capacity of the objects by measuring them in litres and millilitres.
Students estimated each capacity, then measured it and recorded their results.
